A few years ago these dudes asked me to DJ a dub night with them in Hollywood. I don’t even remember how I met them, to tell you the truth, but they asked me to make a dub mix to make sure it was stuff they liked. So I sat down one day, made this mix, and sent it to them. The first night we played it was completely pouring — like monsoon style — on a Monday night I think, or maybe it was Sunday, so of course no one came. The music was good though, and we had a little DJ booth that was pretty rad. It was in some japanese bar with low stools and huts. I was pretty into it.

The next week we did it, it poured again. Totally weird. But again, barely anyone was there. I could sense by this point that the DJ who put it together for us was a short-temper type, so I guessed it wouldn’t be long before it was over. I didn’t care, I got paid, free beer and a chance to listen to my records super loud on a really nice sound system.

Turned out I was right about the temper, and it we didn’t even make it to the third week. In an attempt to get more people there on our night, the owner booked a comedy night or something until 10 after which we would play. Sounded perfect to me, it’s not like dub is offensive music and a lot of people like it, so most likely those who were there would stay and enjoy it. I guess the temper dude thought differently and in some way told the owner to fuck off. At least we got a good mix out of the whole deal.
