doubt…

26 July 2010 by steven 15 Comments

Someone told me today, “You’re like a giant pigeon just shitting on the world.” It was in response to the fact that I didn’t really like Inception that much. I won’t bore you with my Inception nope, because I know a lot of you out there loved the fuck out of it and would probably, like the pigeon guy, take my opinions personally. If you do want to know how I felt about it, just go to Rotton Tomatoes and read some of the “didn’t like” reviews. I might not be the majority, but I’m definitely not alone in my thoughts about the movie, which my friend Andy summed up nicely, “It wasn’t as smart as it thought it was.”

It was interesting the guy said it though, because it ties into what I think and talk about often. The way people pounce on me for the negativity. The other day my friend was giving me shit about the straight nopes and how I just sound like a complainer. Honestly, I kind of wish he’d kept it to himself, as I do everyone else who just thinks the world can do without my complaining. It’s not complaining to me, it’s just critical discussion with a little style advice thrown in. If you think this world is perfect as is, we have nothing to talk about. Maybe I have to be more polite with the language and say stuff like “In my humble opinion..” But that would be a total lie. There is nothing humble to me about my opinion. If you don’t have ego there, where do you have it? In my egotistical and completely narcissistic researching of the facts, I’ve found…

What it all gets down to is doubt. I once had a teacher in school who told me, “You will always offend someone, you might as well just offend everyone.” That was some solid advice. I don’t think he meant to go out of your way to be abrasive, because that’s not what he did. He just meant do what you do, and know whatever you do someone isn’t going to like it. If you emotionally preemptive-strike the attacks, you’ll do much better handling them when they do come. It’s something to work on, but rarely mastered. There is no rule book or back-of-the-game-box-top to check against. We are all just guitarists in a jam-band and our solo is up. The best we can hope for is to stay in key, even though we often dream of blowing hippy-mind with some epic shredding.

There is a fine-yet-blurry line between critical and complaint, and I’m for sure guilty of stumbling over it. I wish I could egotistically know it was for the greater good, but truthfully, the best I can do is stay the course and continue the never-ending battle with doubt. Maybe my opinions are humble after all.

In my completely egotistical opinion, you are allowed to dislike Inception.

    And Radiohead.

And people douche-ily explaining why their iPhone/iPad/Macbook is better than whatever works perfectly well for you.

And hipsters in low v-neck tees and big glasses and stupid haircuts/beards and faux Eastern European peasant fashion who look like they’re in an all-American Apparel staff cast of “Hair”.

    Man, that felt good.

I do agree with you about Inception. It was alright, but not fucking AMAZING and not nearly as intelligent as it wants to be. Go read some psychoanalytic theory or something! Anyway, I am just dreading the coming cult and the over-analyzation of the movie discussing the intellectual implications of what is considered reality and non-reality, as if it were a real dichotomy. At least, it’s enjoyable to watch.

Don’t worry, it’s the Janes Addiction of movies. In ten years no one will admit they were blown away.

@ellen.. haha.. see? Some of us need it.

Oh, whatever, pigeon guy! Does he realize that HE is in essence noping you noping Inception (or deep vee tees, or whatever). Everybody nopes something. We don’t all love everything about the world and the nopes are funny. It’s not like you’re noping world peace. You nope fairly inconsequential stuff like Radiohead or pleats. Yeah, of course some people like these things and that’s alright. Doesn’t mean you have to. Then there are those of us who don’t like them and are like, fuck yeah, ape! I thought I was the only one who didn’t like that crap!

And come on, are you really expected to be all nicey-nice about it? That’s not good writing, mmkay? It would be pretty lame to be all, “Well, it’s totally cool if YOU like it, and I’m not judging you, but in my humble opinion, Inception just wasn’t my cup of tea.” Who wants to read that? Write “Inception sucked big donkey balls!” and that’s what people respond to. Strong opinions. If ya don’t like it, don’t read. Such an amazingly simple solution!

And by the way, I thought Inception was pretty overrated. But I do admit to wanting to see it again just to figure out what the hell happened. So I guess Nolan did his job.

So keep on with the nopes, ape, and don’t doubt it for a second. Some of us happen to think you rock.

I assume that the notion of the Straight Yeps (or Straight F Yeahs) has crossed your mind. I vote for that as a Nope haters counterbalance – plus I am dying to know what The Ape would Yep on, other than bikes and crew neck T’s and obscure 45s.

It’s not like the Ape is “noping” things that are super controversial. We are all entitled to our own opinions about stuff like movies, music, and iPhones. Personally, I give the Ape an enormous “yep.”

“You will always offend someone, you might as well just offend everyone.” Best advice.

Wait….I thought you noped goin to the theater to see movies? Now you’re goin to see Inception??

  • bobbie said:

I thought the movie was so-so, too. But, about the style advice…what did you think about all of the male’s hairstyles? Not the usual tussled do’s. I found myself staring at them for much of the movie.

I LOVE Radiohead to pieces and yet I skip them every time they turn up on my ipod, AND I LOVE yepping your nopes! Keep nope alive!

    For the ape:

    1. Only the courageous can dabble in nopes.

    2. This ape is one of the most positive dudes out there. Has it not been noticed the kindness in which you address the questions asked? The nopes are always about trends, never a persons character or vulnerabilities.

Yo”re still the best in my book.

  • LoveintheDumps said:

Ive been that guy – stating an unpopular opinion about some crappy movie everyone else seems to love. Revel in it ape, you’re a freethinker.
