curtis, live!

I was never super into Curtis Mayfield. I did once have Superfly on 8-Track that I got at a garage sale and would just leave in the bathroom 8-track machine that turned on when you turned the light on. But even that would get ditched often for the Booker T Green Onions 8-Track. Someone gave me this Curtis, LIve! though and told me I had to listen to it. I am now fully a believer. It’s live in the sense that there are people there listening, but it sounds like ...

white people music…

Do you ever watch a video, or a show, and think about what it must look like to some black dude who was raised in the 70s listening to Al Green and Michael Jackson records? I do. I think about that all the time. I think about these bands like Arcade Fire and Radiohead which, to me, are as white as you can get on the musical spectrum. For some reason when I think white people music now, my mind immediately drifts to “indie rock”. Something about that music scene ...

set-up hiccups..

At the beginning of summer a friend of mine enthusiastically suggested I meet her friend. She told me she thought we were “perfect” for each other. She went on to really sell otherwise skeptical me on this guy. It worked. I had not even seen the dude and the concept “pre-arranged marriage” entered my mind. Ok, not really, I just had the feeling we would be compatible with one another. My friend then sent both of us photographs of each other to seal the deal. Due to traveling conflicts, we ...

ear plugs…

No, not the kind that save your ears from screaming guitars. Those are cool in my book if you want to use them. I’m talking about the ones that kids stuff in their earlobes these days. The other day I went past the Bike Film Festival block party. It was winding down, but I was there long enough to get an idea of what the scene was all about. It was pretty weird to say the least. The weird thing is that bicycle culture in Los Angeles is changing monthly. ...

how to dance, finally…

BBC had an article about good dancing, good health and a bunch of other stuff. They filmed men dancing and woman rated them. Here are the winners and losers of which wiggle will get you closer to that queen bee…in England at least. The only part I’m unsure about is which is funnier. Try it with some music for added larfs.

craigslister twister…

APE-
I know you dislike online dating. I, too (as a girl), have had negative experiences with it. That is, I’ve gotten the usual 200 messages on OkCupid from dudes who I have no interest in ever meeting or making out with.
However, a friend of mine maintains that Craigslist is a better approach, because it allows you to be specific about what you’re looking for and, in theory, fewer random people contact you. But I just have the feeling that Craigslist could attract more murderous psychos. On official dating sites, ...

…

“Águas de Março” is a Brazilian song composed by Antonio Carlos Jobim. Jobim wrote both the English and Portuguese lyrics. The lyrics do not tell a story, but rather present a series of images that form a collage; nearly every line starts with “É…” (“[It] is…”). In both the Portuguese and English versions of the lyrics, “it” is a stick, a stone, a sliver of glass, a scratch, a cliff, a knot in the wood, a fish, a pin, the end of the road,” and many other things, although some ...

vacationarity donations…

This confession might sound funny to you if you read the nopes often, but as opinionated and annoyingly stubborn I might come across as, I really am one of the most sway-able people you’ll ever meet. Ok, maybe not the most, but I would be the guy on the jury who absolutely agrees with whichever lawyer spoke to me last. When I read those point/counter-point articles, after the first I’m usually, “Yea! You tell ‘em!” and the second gets a, “Yay, what he said!” What I’m saying is; if you ...

viral contesting…

Recently I saw an advertisement for a movie contest. The gist of the contest was that you make a two minute video of your proposed project and the winners would get a camera to shoot their movie with. I was super excited about it, not only because I had the perfect idea for a movie but also because I love the idea of limiting yourself to one piece of gear, like a small SLR camera, to shoot your whole movie with. Quite honestly, with limitless possibilities I get limitlessly confused. ...
